In 2022, humanitarian status was granted to 460 citizens of foreign countries in Georgia, of which the largest number are citizens of Ukraine, and 41 foreigners received refugee status

Last year, humanitarian status was granted to 460 citizens of foreign countries in Georgia, of which the largest number, 367, are citizens of Ukraine.

In particular, according to the statistical data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 39 of the persons granted humanitarian status in Georgia last year were citizens of Afghanistan; 14 - of unidentified citizenship; 13 - Yemen; 11 - Iraq; 4 - Syria, 4 - Somalia; 4 - Russia; 1 - Egypt.

During the mentioned period, a total of 41 citizens of foreign countries received refugee status, of which 19 are citizens of Afghanistan, 5 - Iran, 2 - Russia, 4 - Egypt, 1 - Turkey, 1 - Pakistan, 1 - Syria, and 8 persons of unidentified citizenship.

In the given period, 822 citizens of foreign countries were refused status. Most of them, 310 people are citizens of Iran; Russia - 40; Turkey - 77; Iraq - 45; Egypt - 55; Jordan - 70; Nigeria - 36; Afghanistan - 14; Bangladesh -13.

Last year, 1,473 citizens of foreign countries were registered as asylum seekers, of which the most - 516 persons are citizens of Ukraine. 203 of the registered asylum seekers are from Turkey; Iran - 194, Russia - 115; Jordan - 44; Afghanistan - 31 citizens; Nigeria - 27; Yemen - 21; Jordan - 21; South Africa - 16; Bangladesh - 14.

In 12 months, 165 citizens of other countries were deported from Georgia. Their distribution according to citizenship is as follows: Iran - 29; Turkey - 25; Azerbaijan - 21; Russia - 8; Ukraine - 1.

During the same period, 73 citizens of foreign countries, including 10 from Azerbaijan, were accommodated in the temporary accommodation center; Turkey - 23; India - 5, Russia - 3.

The migration data for 2022 has increased compared to the 2021 statistics. In particular, in 2021, humanitarian status was be granted to 75 citizens of foreign countries in Georgia, and refugee status to 21 persons; 743 citizens of foreign countries were registered as asylum seekers. In 2021, 426 persons were refused status.

For reference, refugee status shall be granted to a person who is not a citizen of Georgia or to a stateless person permanently residing in Georgia, or to a person who is in Georgia and has a reasonable fear that he/she may become a victim of persecution on the basis of race, religion, denomination, ethnicity, or for belonging to a particular social group, or for political opinions, and, because of such fear, can not or does not want to return to his/her country of origin or to enjoy the protection of such country.

Humanitarian status shall be granted to a person who is not a citizen of Georgia, or is a stateless person permanently residing in Georgia, who fails to meet the conditions for granting refugee status and meets any of the following: was forced to leave his/her country of origin due to violence, external aggression, occupation, internal conflicts, mass violations of human rights or significant violations of public order; Can not be forcibly returned to the country of origin and can not travel to another country for legal reasons, in particular the international responsibilities undertaken by Georgia; May face serious life threatening conditions and/or a violation of his/her rights if he/she returns to the country of origin.
